Football Contest a Play in Vegas

Football season is here and in Las Vegas, that means promotions, parties, betting specials, and especially football contests. For the third year running, the best contest in town is “Pick the Pros” at all the Coast properties (Orleans, Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam’s Town, California, and Fremont). It’s not an easy one to win, but it’s free and fun to play. And when you do win, you win big. Last year $500,000 was divvied up between 468 winners for an average of $1,068 each. You don’t have to know anything about football to play; just pick the teams you like and watch the results unfold. You must have a BConnected card to participate, but the players club is free to join. Just swipe your card in a kiosk and get at least three entries (more for higher-ranking club members). Be sure to submit your picks before the kick-off of the first Sunday game.

Super Denny’s: A new super-Denny’s has been announced for the downtown Neonopolis complex. The 6,432-square-foot 24/7 restaurant will feature a full-service bar and a wedding chapel in the middle of the dining space. It’s expected to open before the end of the year.

Neon Museum Opening: After 15 years of planning, the much-anticipated Neon Museum will open its doors to the public on October 27. The museum will occupy a two-acre outdoor space that includes a visitor center housed in the iconic former La Concha Motel lobby.

Question: I like using the monorail, but I hear it hasn’t done well. What is its status?

Answer: Ridership of the Las Vegas Monorail in the second quarter of this year dropped 19% year-over-year, with 1.06 million customers. While a big part of recent declines has been blamed on the closure of the Sahara, which sits at the end of the travel line, June numbers were down over 17% and the Sahara was already closed in June 2011. Still, there has been little, if any, talk about the plug being pulled.
