Numbers are Up in World Series of Poker

Here’s a surprise. While it was expected that participation in this year’s World Series of Poker would be down as a result of the government crackdown on the online sites (the poker bankrolls of many players remain tied up), the numbers are up after the first week of the tournament. A total of 10,624 entries have been logged over the first 11 events, representing a 2.5% increase over last year. And that’s despite an increase in the buy-in for one of the bigger events. Last year saw a record 72,966 participants from 117 countries. The tournament is ongoing at the Rio throughout June and is free to view.

New Mayor: After a dozen years, Las Vegas has a new mayor … kind of. Although former mob attorney Oscar Goodman was forced out of office by term limits, the position was successfully won by his wife, Carolyn Goodman, who took a resounding 61% of the vote.

Fireworks on the 4th: Station Casinos will put on the largest 4th of July fireworks show in Southern Nevada this year. The nine-minute display will begin at 9 p.m. on Independence Day, and will emanate from Aliante Station, Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, Red Rock, and Green Valley Ranch.

Vintage: The popular lounge duo Zowie Bowie trades Top 40s for the classics in the Vintage Vegas Show every Sunday night at Green Valley Ranch. Donning tuxes and evening gowns, they perform oldies like “The Lady is a Tramp’ and “Bei Mir Bist du Schoen,” while backed by 12 to 16 live musicians, most coming from other shows like Matt Goss or Terry Fator. It’s just $10.

Question: Where is Rochdale?
Answer: If you were to ask which city has produced the most World Series of Poker winners so far this year, you might guess New York, Los Angeles, or even London. But the correct answer is Rochdale, England, the home of two different event winners. Rochdale is a small town in northern England, near Manchester.
