Witness Protection: Intimate Stories of Mobsters Who Sqealed

Strip Las Vegas magazine features another of Huntington Press’ “mob” memoirs for its “Witness Protection” series, with excerpts from Frank Cullotta and Dennis Griffin’s collaboration, Cullotta.

The man you see in the film Casino is the real Frank Cullotta, the same man who did the actual murder for which he was given immunity. Scorsese had Cullotta act out the scene rather than Frank Vincent, who portrayed Cullotta in the movie,” says Casino author/screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi.

Frank Cullotta is the real deal. He and Tony “the Ant” Spilotro were boyhood friends back in Chicago and it was Spilotro who convinced Cullotta to migrate to Vegas. Continue reading

Not just Las Vegas’ oldest, but according to Railroad Pass spokespeople, the “longest-running casino in America” turned 80 last week. Railroad Pass is located a few miles outside of town on S. Boulder Highway. It’s survived all these years by offering bargain pricing and low gambling limits, and throughout August it will celebrate with 80¢ shrimp cocktails and hot dogs, 80¢ draft beers, a $19.31 steak dinner, and $31 room rates. The Tao of foos

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Seven magazine.

July 21, 2011

Once upon a time, foosball tables in Las Vegas were like the buffalo. You could find one anywhere—the Tap House, PT’s, Pink E’s. I don’t know what happened, but I can tell you that real foosball tables today are all but extinct. Yeah, I know there are “foosball tables” scattered all around the Cosmopolitan. But those aren’t real tables. Those are toys.

A “real table” means the Tornado brand. They’re big and bawdy, and the balls you play with are scuffed so you can “toe” ’em (if you know how). There’s usually a dedicated light fixture hanging above, and sometimes a rail where you can set your beer. Real foosball, man!

Decide to Play Great Poker, a Book Report

July 14, 2011

SportsNickel.com reviews Annie Duke’s Decide to Play Great Poker.

Oh, I know what you are thinking before we even get to the meat of the article.  “Another Poker Book???”  And the answer is very simple:  Yes.  Decide to Play Great Poker: A Strategy Guide to No-limit Texas Hold Em is a new book by Annie Duke, considered by many to be the best female poker player in the world.  Heck, who am I kidding.  She is one of the best poker players in the world, period.  She doesn’t need, or deserve, the “female” qualifier in that description.

Laak it Up!

July 11, 2011

PokerNews spots poker pro Phil Laak reading Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier’s The Raiser’s Edge during the 2011 WSOP Main Event.

Right about now, life is good for Mr. Phil Laak. He just finished 4th in Event #57: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better, which was good for $133,377 and a seat in Annie Duke’s Epic Poker League. Today, he’s been playing on his iPad, reading Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier’s Raiser’s Edge, and he even grabbed the ESPN film crew to give a shout out to All American Dave; the famed chef/trainer who feeds so many grinders at the WSOP.

Oh, and he’s also ran his stack up to around 80,000 chips. Pretty sick, kid. Pretty sick.

Decide to Play Great Poker

July 10, 2011

Gambling expert and author Richard W. Munchkin reviews Annie Duke’s new title for Huntington Press.

Decide To Play Great Poker is a new book by Annie Duke, and John Vorhaus.  Annie and John have a light conversational style that makes this a fun read.  It is geared to the beginning and intermediate player.  This is not a “set of problems” book, like the books by Dan Harrington.  This is much more like Theory of Poker, by David Sklansky.  (Theory of Poker is a must-read for any serious player.)  The idea is to teach you how to think about your poker decisions, and the book does this quite effectively. Bertrand Grospellier Wins First WSOP Title. European Poker Pro Collects $331,639 and Becomes Third French WSOP Champion in History.

If Lady Gaga has a poker twin it’s most certainly Bertrand Grospellier. Outrageously flamboyant, gifted beyond compare, and famous on multiple continents, the international maven gamesman is one of those rare individuals in our midst who commands attention without even trying.  He changes a room by his very presence inside it.  Maybe it’s the hair.  Maybe it’s his towering stature.  Maybe it’s his rock-star lifestyle.

Or maybe still – perhaps it’s his natural talent. Continue reading
