Numbers are Up in World Series of Poker

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

April 8, 2011

Here’s a surprise. While it was expected that participation in this year’s World Series of Poker would be down as a result of the government crackdown on the online sites (the poker bankrolls of many players remain tied up), the numbers are up after the first week of the tournament. A total of 10,624 entries have been logged over the first 11 events, representing a 2.5% increase over last year. And that’s despite an increase in the Continue reading

Good Call!

May 26, 2011

Huntington Press author Annie Duke is interviewed in depth about her new title, Decide to Play Great Poker, in the latest edition of Vegas Seven magazine.

“This isn’t a book about rules; it’s a book about tools. It’s essentially a decision-science approach to poker playing … Even the most simple choice — should I play this hand or not? — is related to the specific situation in which you are sitting, because that determines the range of hands you can play.

Las Vegas Sahara Goes Out Quietly

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

May 18, 2011

It was anything but a grand exit for the Sahara, which closed last week on the north end of the Strip. Whereas previous closings have been “events” of sorts, nothing was done to commemorate the casino’s nearly 60 years, many as one of Las Vegas’ premier casinos. By the final day, all the games were buttoned up and a single bar (with only two brands of beer available) remained Continue reading

Las Vegas’ Fortunes Changing

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

May 11, 2011

Gambling and visitation numbers continue to paint an ever-improving picture for Las Vegas. The latest gambling-win reports show a big 12.9% year-over-year increase on the Strip for the month of March. These types of gains used to be routine, but it’s been five months since the Strip registered an uptick of any amount. Supporting the win increase was a 5.6% increase in visitor volumn. Poker Bust Could Hurt WSOP Numbers

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

April 20, 1011

Last week the Department of Justice moved to shut down three of the world’s biggest online poker sites—PokerStars, FullTilt Poker, and Absolute Poker. The action put an immediate end to deals in the works that would partner Wynn Resorts with PokerStars, and a Station Casinos-affiliated company with FullTilt. There were also concerns that ESPN would drop coverage of the Continue reading
