The new arrival is drawing attention in Las Vegas because there hasn’t been a big buffet opening in Sin City since the Wicked Spoon debuted at The Cosmopolitan several years ago, insiders noted.

“There’s a buzz about this one,” said Anthony Curtis, publisher of LasVegasAdvisor.com.

“It’s been pretty quiet in Vegas for the past few years due to the economy,” he said, “so this is something that we haven’t seen in a while and I would say that the anticipation is pretty high.” Continue reading

Decide to Play Great Poker by Annie Duke: this is a fantastic book for novices and poker players who are still new to the game. Advantage play in Blackjack is still alive and kicking, as demonstrated in the newly released The Blackjack Life by Nathaniel Tilton (Huntington Press, August 2012). The book describes itself as “a journey through the inner world of card counting, the lessons of teamwork, and the clandestine pursuit of beating the odds.” …

The Blackjack Life describes how Tilton excelled in this challenge. Not everyone can follow in his footsteps, but any player who reads this book will make casino personnel wary.

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

Aug. 29, 2012

Football season is here and in Las Vegas, that means promotions, parties, betting specials, and especially football contests. For the third year running, the best contest in town is “Pick the Pros” at all the Coast properties (Orleans, Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam’s Town, California, and Fremont). It’s not an easy one to win, but it’s free and fun to play. And when you do win, you win big. Last year $500,000 was divvied up between 468 winners for Continue reading

Up first, Investigative journalist and veteran true crime author, Cathy Scott will discuss the investigation into the murder of multi-millionaire George Kogan, who was gunned down by a hitman in broad daylight on the streets of New York City. The case boggled detectives for nearly twenty years until the investigation honed in on Kogan’s wife, Barbara, who was the beneficiary of millions of dollars of life insurance. So Many Books, So Little Time

Card Player Europe reviews Huntington Press title The Raiser’s Edge, by poker luminaries Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Lee Nelson, Tysen Streib and Tony Dunst.

Aug. 7, 2012

It’s Sunday August 5 and last night I busted out of the £200+£25 deep stack at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club. I debated about driving home a night early having been a bit disappointed at not making it to day two, but decided against the idea. I took a walk by the canals to contemplate the year ahead of me and finish reading “The Raiser’s Edge” by Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Lee Nelson, Tysen Streib and Tony Dunst. Continue reading

July 23, 2012

Just before 3 p.m. on a spring afternoon in May 1998, a car drove up to a crowded car wash on a street corner in Compton, California. An argument broke out between two groups of men and, a minute later, the sound of gunfire erupted. When the smoke cleared, four men were sprawled out, bleeding on the ground. Two were already dead.
