Seven for Seven

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Seven magazine’s “The Deal.”

July 16, 2012

For years I’ve picked and published the “Las Vegas’ Top Ten Values” at LasVegasAdvisor.com, but that list is tailored for visitors. The list that follows is different in that it’s been tweaked for locals. While this list doesn’t constitute the absolute best deals in town, the following “Seven for Seven” is a potent mix of drinking, dining, entertainment and gambling that won’t disappoint.

Las Vegas Room Rates Drop for Summer

Anthony Curtis nationally syndicated weekly column.

July 4, 2012

Summertime in Las Vegas traditionally means low room rates and the summer of 2012 is no different. A survey conducted last week turned up 52 hotel-casinos with rates of $50 and below, four more than last year’s total. Rooms with prices of $20 and below were found at El Cortez, Fiesta Rancho, Gold Spike, and Rio, while Boulder Station, California, Circus Circus, the D, Excalibur, Four Queens, Fremont, Harrah’s, Hooters, Imperial Palace, LVH, Main Street Station, Orleans, Palace Station, Plaza, and Riviera were among 30 with rates of $30 or less. Al Mancini, Las Vegas Restaurant Critic, Is Answering Questions

Eating Las Vegas co-author and flamboyant man-about-town Al Mancini is the guest host for NYT’s “Diner’s Journal” feature, where he answered readers questions about all things Las Vegas and dining for a week.

June 26, 2012

Al Mancini is a conspicuous character in a city full of them — Las Vegas, where he is a restaurant critic and journalist. From graduating from Brooklyn Law School, to tending bar at CBGB’s Pizza in the East Village, to writing reviews of strip clubs, he has followed an unorthodox path to the luxurious dining rooms he now frequents.

Las Vegas: Bright Lights, Big City, Small Town

NPR’s State of the Reunion visits Las Vegas, and hears from Huntington Press author Matt O’Brien about the homless people whose lives he’s explored in Beneath the Neon and My Week at the Blue Angel.

Residents narrate the city’s rise during the real estate boom and the depth of the foreclosure crisis since the bubble burst.

Beneath the casinos and the glitz of Las Vegas’ strip, another world exists. In the tunnels built as a flood channel several miles beneath Las Vegas, several hundred people make their home. Continue reading

Alternative Action

Anthony Curtis weekly column for Vegas Seven magazine.

May 17, 2012

The 43rd World Series of Poker kicks off at the Rio in a week. This one’s gonna be interesting, as participation will provide an important gauge as to what’s going on in the poker world one year after Black Friday (and probably less than a year before the online game is legalized, in one form or another). Las Vegas Riviera Upgrading

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

May 9, 2012

The north-Strip Riviera is preparing to begin a $20-$30 million upgrade project. Similar to a recent $20 million renovation at the Stratosphere, most of the work will involve much-needed improvements to the public areas of the resort. Specifically targeted is the convention space, which will have its entrance built out and house the relocated front desk. Other parts of the interior will also be spruced up and the casino’s exterior will get a new paint job. The physical improvements follow several innovative promotions the Riviera has implemented recently, most targeted toward attracting casino players. It’s all part of a bigger plan to raise the profile of one of the longest-operating casinos in Las Vegas. Continue reading

A short guide to Daylife

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Vegas Seven magazine.

May 10, 2012

It’s been half a decade since Las Vegas pools began turning into nightclubs. Or day clubs, rather. There have been some false starts (remember the stripper pool at the Rio?), but all in all, daylife has made it over the hump. Just look at the ads in this magazine and you’ll know what I mean. But how important is it really that DJ-this is playing here and Resident-that is playing there? Continue reading
