Rapper Tupac Shakur’s Digital Resurrection Gets Mixed Reviews

Huntington Press author and Forbes contributing writer Cathy Scott, who wrote best-seller The Killing of Tupac Shakur, shares her thoughts and those of others about the murdered rapper’s recent “appearance” at the Coachella music festival.

Stir it up, the hologram did. The performance, according to the Wall Street Journal, may be just the beginning. It has prompted talk of taking the Tupac hologram on a world tour. And the hologram now has its own Twitter account. The @HologramTupac page description says, “I rap and I’m a hologram.”

Columbia University professor Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, appearing on CNN’s “Starting Point,” seemed baffled by the hologram. “It’s creepy,” he said. “It’s almost like necrophilia. Of course, I’m going to go see it. And I’ll talk about how creepy it was.”

Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother, who had given Dre and Snoop a nod to have the hologram designed, according to TMZ, gave it a thumbs up. Watching a live online stream of the performance, she was “positively thrilled.” Continue reading

Literary Las Vegas

Anna Stothard, who has just made the Orange Prize longlist, goes in search of the places famous writers found decadence and excess in Sin City. Her guide to the underworld is Huntington Press author Matt O’Brien.

March 24, 2012

“Hunter would be disgusted, right?” says a man’s voice. I look up from my copy of Fear and Loathing to see that my literary tour guide for the evening has turned up. Local journalist and author of Beneath the Neon, Matthew O’Brien has bought himself a Slurpee – although you get the sense he’d rather have a whiskey – and sits down next to me. “All these arcade games would have been the same, though,” he says, sweeping his hand over our surroundings and taking my book off me. “Shoot the pasties off the nipples of a 10ft bull dyke and win a cotton-candy goat?” he reads from a marked passage.

5 Ways to Be Better at Risk-Taking

Time Moneyland Career Strategies chooses Huntington Press author Annie Duke as one of five experts at risk-taking.

March 15, 2012

You may never tame lions or swim with the sharks, but you still have plenty of opportunities to act courageously every day. Learn the secrets to becoming bolder and braver from five experts (including a poker champion and a stunt coordinator) who smile in the face of fear.

3. Don’t Put Everything on the Line
I set aside money for playing poker, and I risk only a small amount of it on each game. You can’t take advantage of big financial opportunities (a passion, a new job, a potential investment) if you’re too stretched. That means you need to maintain a lifestyle that’s more modest than what you can actually afford. Even then, you should never put all your time or cash into one venture. The odds of ruin are just too high.

Annie Duke is a Los Angeles–based professional poker player. She won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions in 2004 and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship in 2010. Continue reading

O’Sheas Closing on Las Vegas Strip

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

March 21, 2012

First it was closing, then it wasn’t. Now it is, but it will be back again … or something. All that’s really certain is that O’Sheas, the smallest casino on the Strip, will close its doors on April 30 to make way for the Linq retail project.
