Madness is here

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Vegas Seven magazine.

March 15, 2012

The Super Bowl is the biggest day of the year in Las Vegas sportsbooks, but it’s not the biggest event. The biggest event is the March Madness basketball tournament, which kicks off its three-week run this weekend.

If you haven’t experienced being in a sportsbook during the tournament, give it a try, especially on Thursday and Friday, when the games begin early and run all day. The books air every one in real time, and it’s an amazing scene. Of course, that’s to be expected when almost everyone in the room has money riding on something. Continue reading

Los Angeles Becomes The Newest Hub For Live Storytelling Events Brought To You By New York’s The Moth

HuffPost Los Angeles reports on the return of The Moth literary event, which featured Huntington Press author and poker champ Annie Duke.

March 2, 2012

As an unofficial welcome back to Los Angeles, The Moth put on their biggest show in years at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Thursday night. It was sold out and buzzing with life. They brought in the big guns for this show – five storytellers who had already worked with The Moth before. “It’s 1,700 people. You have to have some experience to get on that stage,” Burns explained. The five storytellers included essayist Jenny Allen, surgeon Kodi Azari, author Jerry Stahl, comedic writer Brian Finkelstein and poker champion Annie Duke. Continue reading

PokerNews Book Review: Poker With A Purpose

Huntington Press author Annie Duke is praised for her contribution to this new poker collaboration, and for her previous title, Decide to Play Great Poker.

Feb. 23, 2012

Duke’s sections on “The Difference Between Cash Games and Tournaments” and “Board Texture and the Size of Your Decision Space” seemed like snippets from her book, Decide to Play Great Poker, which I consider to be among the best poker texts written as of late. In Poker With a Purpose, Duke’s contributions are succinct and edifying, almost like missing chapters from Decide to Play Great Poker. Continue reading

Catering to specific clientele no novelty for Las Vegas casinos

Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012

With traditional Hawaiian cuisine on its menu and a “hang-loose” island spirit permeating the property, the California Hotel and Casino long ago established itself as a destination for Hawaiian tourists visiting Las Vegas.

But finding new ways to cater to specific communities and bring in guests isn’t a novel idea for Las Vegas casinos. In fact, it’s a necessity.

With casinos offering the same basic products — beds, food, entertainment and a place to gamble — finding ways to differentiate a property is crucial, said Anthony Curtis, president of LasVegasAdvisor.com. Continue reading

Mob Museum Opens in Las Vegas

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

Last Tuesday marked the opening of the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, better known as the Mob Museum. Located downtown in an old post office and federal courthouse that dates back to 1933, this is Las Vegas’ second mob-themed attraction. The first was the Mob Experience at the Tropicana, Continue reading

“The indiscreet charm of the douchebagerie” … and so many other factors affecting Vegas gaming.

Leading casino0-gaming analyst Dennis Conrad praises a recent post from LasVegasAdvisor.com business blogger David McKee.

Feb. 20, 2012

Introduction by Dennis Conrad, President and Chief Strategist, Raving Consulting Company

What are douchebageries anyway? How will casinos in Florida and Massachusetts affect the rest of the country? What can we learn from the major growth and fall of Sin City?

One of the most talented and intelligent gaming writers I know, David McKee, hits upon all this and so much more in his recent article, “After the fall – What future — if any — does the Strip have?,” just published in Las Vegas CityLife. It is well worth the read to get a grand perspective of what’s happening in our global gaming community.

David begins his article with: “In 1995, the cover of Life magazine famously posed the question, ‘Las Vegas: Is the Boom Overextended?’ Sin City got 50 years of good laughs out of that. ‘We think 96 percent or 97 percent occupancy is like scraping the bottom of the barrel,’ bragged Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson in late 2007. Nobody’s laughing anymore.” Click here to read the entire article. Thanks for a terrific and insightful read, David.

Making the Most of the Big Game

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Vegas Seven magazine.

Feb. 2, 2012

This Sunday will be one of the biggest days of the year in Las Vegas, as hundreds of thousands of visitors descend on the city for Super Bowl weekend. Officially labeled “the Big Game” by the casinos to avoid problems with NFL trademarks, this year’s marquee matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants is expected to generate more interest than any Super Bowl in recent years, and possibly the most ever, with the betting handle expected to approach the 2006 record of $94.5 million. Meanwhile, the whole city will be promoting, and locals will have a better opportunity than most to take advantage. Continue reading

Documentary Review: Life On The Line

Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard site reviews sports-betting documentary Life on the Line, distributed exclusively via LasVegasAdvisor.com

A new documentary probes the secretive world of professional sports betting
ENTERTAINMENT, MOVIES
BY JIMMY CHAIRMAN
Feb. 5, 2013

“Filmmaker Isaac Feder invites viewers into a world that typically grants very limited access to the average sports fan and gambler. While he does manage to accomplish the “insider’s look” into this fascinating world, Feder’s film plays out more like a character study of the colorful band of miscreants who inhabit it. And that, perhaps, is Feder’s greatest accomplishment: gaining the trust of a group of people that, in playing the odds, typically trust very few.”

Buffet of Entertainment

Anthony Curtis’ weekly column for Vegas Seven magazine.

January 26, 2012

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the Buffet of Buffets deal from Caesars Entertainment. My conclusion was that this pass, which allows you to eat as many times as you want in the buffets at several casinos over a 24-hour period, can be a good deal if you use it optimally. Apparently, most people don’t, because the deal is still going strong. So strong, in fact, that Caesars has done the same thing for show-goers with its All Stage Pass. Continue reading
