Las Vegas Author Matt O’Brien Exposes Plight Of Underground Homeless

March 1, 2011

The Huffington Post interviews Huntington Press author Matt O’Brien and reviews his latest book, My Week at the Blue Angel and Other Stories from the Storm Drains, Strip Clubs, and Trailer Parks of Las Vegas.

Below the flashing neon, imagine an underground Las Vegas of winding flood channels, drippy and dark. The channels seem inhabitable if not for the threadbare mattresses and some out-of-place artwork on the walls. People actually live here.

And Las Vegas author Matt O’Brien writes about them — real, raw stories of the desert homeless who were drawn to the Strip’s intrigue but now live unseen, below the surface of the city.

New Stadium Proposed for Las Vegas

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

February 23, 2011

Preliminary plans for a 40,000-seat domed football stadium to be built on the UNLV campus have been submitted to Las Vegas officials. The man behind the proposal is Ed Roski, who also owns Silverton and is part owner of the L.A. Lakers. The Continue reading

Las Vegas Sports Books Win, Barely

Anthony Curtis’ nationally syndicated weekly column.

Feb. 9., 2011

Las Vegas’ sports books took in $87.5 million in bets on the Super Bowl and were lucky to escape with a $724,000 profit, representing a minuscule .83%. The combination of the favorite Packers winning and the score going over the total of 45 was a worst-case scenario for the books, since the public traditionally bets favorites and over. However, other wagering options for the game, including proposition bets and parlay Continue reading

Eating Las Vegas

Kudos to Eating Las Vegas from the  Los Angeles Times’ “Daily Dish” column.

January 28, 2011

Frequent visitors to Vegas (and you know who you are) should check out a new book called “Eating Las Vegas,” the result of a collaboration among three of the city’s food writers. That would be the dueling critics from KNPR’s biweekly radio show “State of Nevada: Food Talk With Max Jacobson and John Curtas,” plus Al Mancini of the alternative weekly CityLife. Before moving to Vegas almost a dozen years ago, Jacobson was Continue reading
